Prostudio Creatives

Evolution of Studio photography

The photo studio used to be places where photos were ‘washed’, the Kenyan lingo for printing coloured photos from negatives. Some operated a small space beside the darkroom for taking family portraits behind colour curtains or close-ups for the photo that will grace your final moments on earth looking full of life, confident and young.

But that has changed since Kodak and its analogue cameras died, and photo studios have had to reinvent themselves in the social media age where anyone can take a picture and share it online instead of printing.

Today, photo studios are complex businesses that can recreate vistas, offer multiple sets for different photo backgrounds and work with makeup artists re-imagine reality and create art. Photo studios are fitted with intimate sets, playpens for birthday shoots and comfortable cradles for baby bumps as life is documented from conception.

Social media has been good for studios as more and more amateur photographers seek professionally done images infused with a little bit of creativity. At Prostudios, we have learned one thing from our journey into photography, to let our subjects tell their stories while helping them capture on camera the image they have of themselves, with a touch of class.
