Owalo launches Thika Jitume Hub

Thika Technical Training Institute will host the local Jitume digital lab after ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo launched the facility on Thursday.

“The Kenya Kwanza government has initiated the labs to equip Kenyan youth with digital skills, to prepare them for online jobs,” he said on Twitter.

Jitume, which is Swahili for ‘take it upon yourself’, aims to cut the proportion of unemployed youth in the country through sensitization on the digital opportunities available to them.

“The Jitume Lab project seeks to address issues of connectivity, device access and digital skills, as well as job opportunities targeted for the youth countrywide,” Mr Owalo said on February 25 at a similar event in the Eldoret National Polytechnic.

The initiative has two current projects; Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Installation and the 100 million Learners’ program (Digital Skills).

The VDI initiative is powered by Konza city and partners like the Thunderbird School of Global Management to deploy 23,000 VDIs and enable a million learners to get business training at no cost. Konza is providing the VDIs and utilizing partnerships to provide free scholarships to determined youth seeking training.

On the other hand, the 100M Learners’ program offers high-grade online education from world-class accredited institutions across the globe at no cost to position Konza as a talent hub.
