CSs to field questions from MPs on Wednesdays

Cabinet Secretaries are expected to start answering questions from lawmakers every Wednesday following change of the standing orders in the House.

The ministers shall be appearing in National Assembly on Wednesdays between 2:30pm and 5:30pm.

“A Cabinet Secretary shall provide physical and electronic copies of the reply to a question at least a day before appearing before the House,” amended Standing Order 42(c) notes in part. Urgent questions shall be answered within 48 hours while ministers have two weeks or 14 days to provide answers, a departure from earlier regulation that gave them 30 days to answer questions.

The change of procedure of conducting House business is in line with President William Ruto’s push to enhance accountability in ministries, a plan he proposed during his inaugural speech in the National Assembly last year.
