Market remains unscathed, as turnover rises to Sh1.2billion

The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) defied a highly polarized political day in Nairobi to post growth in the daily trading.

There was a mixed performance on the course during Tuesday’s trading on a day that was packed with political action following the controversial swearing of opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The equities market was boosted by the sale of Safaricom shares, turnover rose to Sh1.2billion from the previous sessions Sh287M. The number of shares traded stood at 43M shares against 9.5M shares posted on Monday.

However, the NSE 20 Share Index was down 11.96 points to stand at 3727.73. All Share Index (NASI) shed 0.12 points to settle at 181.04.

The NSE 25 Share Index was also down 8.52 points to stand at 4511.76.

Banking

The Banking Sector traded shares worth Sh414M and accounted for 34.18 percent of the day’s traded value. Barclays Bank stirred this sector with 14.7M shares valued at Sh154M changing hands at between Sh10.30 and Sh10.60. KCB Group shares climbed by 1.70 percent to Sh44.75 with shares worth Sh133M transacted.

Equity Group Holdings down 1.71 percent to Sh43.00 moved 2.6M shares worth Sh115M.

Energy & Petroleum

The Energy and Petroleum Sector had shares worth Sh20million transacted and represented 1.68 percent of the day’s traded value. Oil marketer Kenol Kobil had 1.2M shares valued at Sh18million transacted at between Sh14.75 and Kes.15.

Insurance:  

The Insurance sector had shares worth Sh14million transacted and represented 1.19 percent of the day’s traded value. Britam Holdings moved 455,000 shares valued at Sh5.9million at between Sh13 and Sh13.50.

Kenya-Re unchanged at Sh19.75 moved 258,000 shares worth Sh5 million.

Investment:

The Investment Sector had shares worth Sh3million transacted and represented 0.26 percent of the day’s traded value. Centum moved 66,000 shares valued at Sh3million at a fairly stable price of Sh46.

Manufacturing & Allied

The Manufacturing and Allied Sector had shares worth Sh221million transacted and represented 18.29 percent of the day’s traded value. East African Breweries saw 512,000 shares valued at Sh130million changing hands at between Sh252.00 and Sh254.

British African Tobacco (BAT) shares gained 2.5 percent to Sh779 with shares worth Sh90million realized.

Telecommunication:

Safaricom was the day’s main feature with 18million shares valued at Sh535M changing hands at between Sh29.25 and Sh30. This represented 44.21 percent of the day’s traded value.

Bond Market:  

Bonds worth Sh3.9billion transacted compared to Sh2.6 billion registered the previous session on Monday.
