Lab technician scoops KBL’s Sh1 million prize

In Kenya, restaurants and bars get into an especially tough spot when people don’t go out. Many revelers normally head to their locals on weekends and holidays to dine and take their favourite drinks as they catch up with friends.

By August last year the usual buzz of activity in the sector had been replaced by a steady stream of bad news. About 60,000 jobs had been lost owing to nationwide crash in visits to bars and restaurants. Some bars closed indefinitely.

It was about five months since the first case of Covid-19 was recorded in the country prompting the government to order a raft of measures, including closure of bars, to help check the spread of the pandemic.

Upon the reopening of bars in September last year, however, the footfall in bars took a nosedive as strict guidelines to promote social distancing and hygiene were implemented.

It is around this time that Erick Kago Wairia checked into his local bar in Gatundu north area to check out on his friends and as well as to enjoy his favourite drink.

At the same time, Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) had just rolled out a campaign dubbed ‘Dandia Bonus na Kaquarter’ aimed at rewarding lucky consumers of its spirits range of products.

Sometimes luck is all you need and this seems to have been the moment when Erick ordered a 250ml Captain Morgan Rum and entered the ‘Dandia Bonus na Kaquarter’ competition to try his chance.

And yes, Erick, who works as a medical laboratory technician, has been unveiled as the winner of the Sh1 million windfall, bringing an end to the 12-week campaign that started last year.

The promotion sought to reward consumers with a set of prizes including daily cash and airtime, weekly rewards of Sh20,000 and Sh50,000 and monthly awards of Sh200,000 and Sh500,000. The grand prize was to see the lucky winner walk home with Sh1 million. A total of Sh25 million worth of prizes were issued during the drive.

“We are committed to continue offering brands with a strong value proposition as part of our efforts to expand our business,” said KBL head of spirits, Flavia Othim, during the award ceremony on Friday, 11 February 2021.
