Bolt spins out food delivery service in Nairobi as competition hots up
Taxi hailing company Bolt has diversified into food delivery services in a bid to shore up revenue in an increasingly competitive market.
The service, Bolt Food, which will be available to customers via a mobile app will see the company join nearly a dozen other firms in providing a similar service to customers around Nairobi.
With the launch, Kenya becomes the third country in Africa where customers can order meals through Bolt food after a successful take off in South Africa and Ghana.
“Food delivery has been a popular request for quite some time and we are glad to bring this service to the millions of people, who are using our platform. The infrastructure and experience we have built up with our ride-hailing business give us a good platform to expand and diversify our services,” said Bolt Food country manager Edgar Kipngetich Kitur.

Bolt Food has already on boarded over 200 food providers and restaurants on the platform including KFC, Big Square, Pizza Mojo, Urban Gourmet Burger, Debonairs Pizza, Steers Ohcha Noodle Bar, The Chef House, Wings Kenya Alchemist, Shokudo Japanese, Barista & Co, Mercado, Awash Ethiopian restaurant, Charlie’s Bistro and Bao Box among others.
Food delivery business in Nairobi has been gaining popularity with a number of companies cashing in on the stay and work at home mode adopted by many customers during the pandemic.
The roll out of Covid-19 containment measures some of which have limited foot traffic in restaurants has also seen food delivery services continue to gain traction.
Jumia Food, Uber Eats, Glovo and Yum Delivery are some of the companies whose service is just a tap away once you download their apps. Chandarana Foodplus, Dominos Pizza, The Good Food Co, El-daily Kenya, Take Eat Easy and Galitos Food Delivery also make it easy for you to get your favorite meal delivered at your doorstep.
“We are committed to transforming the food delivery sector in Kenya through quality services at affordable costs. All existing drivers are welcome to join the delivery platform but we will be using motorbikes as our primary means of delivering food to ensure fast, efficient service but have bicycles and skaters” added Mr Kitur.
