Safaricom earns coveted data security certification

Safaricom has been accredited with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) Certification, a global standard for data security applied by businesses processing card transactions, as granted by the PCI Security Standard Council (PCI SSC). This achievement is a significant milestone for the company and aligns with its mission to transform from a telecom company to a technology entity by 2025. This certification positions Safaricom as a global payment facilitator for partners such as Google, Uber, Microsoft, and others.

“As we navigate the digital landscape, security remains at the heart of everything we do. This certification for M-PESA is a recognition of our dedication to safeguarding financial transactions of our customers,” stated Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom CEO.

This approval enables the company to offer various solutions such as tap-to-pay, allowing merchants to receive online and in-person card payments from customers. Fintechs and financial institutions can leverage Safaricom’s card processing capabilities to provide end-to-end mobile and card payment solutions.

Payment switch system

With this certification, Safaricom joins a select group of institutions in Africa capable of establishing a regional payment switch system while ensuring the protection of customers, merchants, and partners’ payment data. The company can now enhance API capability to cultivate developers on the M-PESA platform, providing advanced services and expanding the portfolio of mobile money services and payment solutions.

“This development ensures that our customers’ data is protected at all times. It also means that our partners can access more innovative and secure solutions for their clientele,” added Mr. Ndegwa.

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard is a globally recognized framework that ensures the protection of sensitive customer information during transactions. It establishes robust controls and security measures to safeguard against data breaches, fraud, and unauthorized access.

Safaricom remains committed to continually improving security measures and staying abreast of the evolving threat landscape, prioritizing customer well-being at all times.
