A green tribute: NCBA sponsors maiden Wangari Maathai marathon
Regional lender NCBA has made a commitment to environmental conservation by sponsoring the inaugural Wangari Maathai Marathon with a contribution of Kes2 million.
The marathon, in honor of the late Nobel Prize winner and environmentalist Prof. Wangari Maathai, will take place on 3rd March 2024 at Karura Forest in Nairobi, coinciding with African Environmental Day.
The theme of the day, ‘Power of One,’ reflects Prof. Maathai’s beliefs and advocacy for environmental protection.
John Gachora, NCBA Group Managing Director, expressed gratitude to the Wangari Maathai Foundation for partnering with NCBA to honor Prof. Maathai’s legacy.
He highlighted NCBA’s commitment to environmental conservation, aligning with the regional lender’s sustainability goals to plant and grow 10 million trees by 2030.
The marathon program will include a tree-planting initiative with participation from NCBA, the Wangari Maathai Foundation, Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, elite Kenyan athletes, and other dignitaries.

Promoting environmental conservation
The marathon will feature a 5km fun race, 2km children’s race, 10km, and 21km races, open to participants of all ages.
Njeri Kabeberi, President, and CEO of the Wangari Maathai Foundation, lauded NCBA and other sponsors for supporting the marathon. She emphasized the event’s significance in honoring Prof. Maathai’s legacy and promoting environmental conservation globally.
The marathon is a testament to the ‘Power of One’ spirit, encouraging individuals to make a difference in preserving the planet. Tickets for the marathon are on sale at Karura Forest throughout February.
NCBA, through its Change The Story Platform, will continue to partner with organizations to meet its 15 Sustainability Commitments, further demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability.
