Can impeached Governor Ferdinand Waititu pull a ‘Wambora’ in Kiambu?

Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been impeached by a majority vote of 63 MCAs while 28 ward reps abstained and one voted against the motion.

Ndenderu MCA Solomon Kinuthia petitioned the Speaker to have the governor removed from office for allegedly violating the Constitution, Public Finance Management Act and County Government Act.

He cited a lack of accountability in the management of county resources which led to unsustainable debts and pending obligations to the tune of Sh4billion.

But, the fierce Kiambu governor who is always synonymous with controversy, has survived the test of time so to speak.

Until his well-orchestrated impeachment on Thursday, the embattled county boss has been a friend of the state. He was accused of exhibiting gross misconduct by usurping the powers of the County Public Service Board by directly hiring staff on a casual basis as directors, assistant directors, as well as sub-county administrators.

And with his arrest came the onslaught by his deputy Mr. Dindi Nyoro to take over the operations of the county. This, played on for some time until it was eminent that the governor was losing his grip in the area following factions among the MCAs.

Kenyans on twitter, as creative as they are, came up with ‘memes’; teasing each other of sleeping and working on counties without governors in apparent reference to those who stay in Kiambu County but work in Nairobi County.

What is not lost is that the once crusader of ‘instance justice’ has finally tasted his own medicine, albeit, painfully.

Although not the first governor to be impeached, Waititu still has a lease of life to pull a ‘Wambora’ on the disgruntled Kiambu MCA’s through appeal. Just like his counterpart in Embu-who is serving a second term in office after several attempts to send him home, the Kiambu governor might just fight back like a wounded lion.

Going by the history of impeachment on governors in the country, Waititu’s case might just be another long shot!
