TSC — 24 secondary school principals succumb to Covid

The Teachers Service Commission boss Nancy Macharia has urged all teachers to take Covid-19 vaccine as soon as possible even as she revealed that 24 school principals have succumbed to the disease.

However, the TSC boss noted that a total of 37 secondary school teachers; including 24 principals, three deputy principals, and 10 classroom teachers have died due to the virus, adding that Kenya cannot afford to lose any more teachers.

Speaking on Monday, May 10, during the release of exam results for the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), Ms Macharia said 151,494 teachers have so far been inoculated.

“This constitutes 48.9 per cent female teachers and 51 per cent male. The TSC is impressed with the high rate of Covid-19 vaccine uptake among teachers. The majority of the teachers aged 58 and above have taken the jab,” she said.

Dr Macharia said this was achieved despite the fact that most teachers have been on the move, either during the administration of the examination or during the marking.

“Having concluded the examination period, I beseech all teachers to take up the jab. The President granted all teachers an opportunity to get the vaccination regardless of age. Let us utilize this gracious opportunity to protect our lives.”

She said the commission has also provided full medical cover for Covid-19-related ailments as well as a medical insurance app; ‘WalimuCare App,’ through health insurance provider MINET.

The app allows teachers to access tele-medicine access anytime and from anywhere including isolation centers and even prescriptions from one’s homes.

“The app also ensures access to Covid-19 health tips. You can track your hospital visits, order for medication, and manage your dependents,” she added.

Ms Macharia also said that a vaccination center will also be put up at the TSC offices specifically for teachers.
