Together in song: Star artists grace Africa Day virtual show
A galaxy of music stars has united virtually to mark this year’s Africa Day concert, an event organised to celebrate 58 years since formation of the African Union.
The 2021 edition of Africa Day concert featured some high-profile music artists who aimed at bringing the continent together in song.
Now in its second edition, the annual Pan-African event is organised courtesy of YouTube music and MTV Base.
It was launched last year to celebrate Africa Day and raise funds to support purchase of food and medication to families affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Formed on May 25, 1963, the Organization of African Unity was established to fight against colonialism and apartheid while also fostering peace and growth in Africa. It later rebranded to African Union in July 2002.

The show featured African finest talents with performances by Bella Shmurda (Nigeria), Blaq Diamond (South Africa), Elaine (South Africa), Foculistic (South Africa), Gyakie (Ghana), Omah Lay (Nigeria), Suspect 95 (Ivory Coast), Teni (Nigeria), Zuchu (Tanzania), Rozzy Sokota (Sierra Leone), Ary (Angola), Mohammed Ramadan (Egypt) and Kenya’s Bahati giving viewers some of the most energetic and amazing pieces.
Special appearances from well-known faces and legendary musicians Angelique Kidjo, Tanzanian bongo star Diamond Platnumz, Congolese singer-cum-songwriter Fally Ipupa turned the show electric.
One of South Africa’s most powerful duos Mafikizolo, the legendary artist Yvonne Chaka Chaka and 31 others entertained fans in the show.
Hosted virtually by American actor Idris Elba Africa Day concert 2021 most definitely gave us a unique content experience that was innovative, informative and entertaining bring viewers diverse range of virtual activities, from storytelling to traditional crafts, musical performances to webinars.
When it came to performances, a good job was done by Zandi Tisani the performance director, with a background in production of fine art, styling and photography.
Working with Clarence Peters alias Clarence shot it, who is a music video director and filmmaker, they most definitely understood what each artist wanted, working with the space provided and the different sound of each artist.
Every set sent a powerful message portrayed by the artist. It was a full display of African excellence as the sounds, sights and rhythm of the continent unit Africa once more this Africa Day.
