More men get the jab as Kenya Covid-19 shots cross 400,000

Over 400,000 people in Kenya have received the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine, latest figures from the Ministry of Health show.

Of the doses administered, men constitute 57 per cent or 213,971 vaccines given while women make up 164,392 shots or 43 per cent of the doses given.

Members of the public, including senior citizens aged 58 years and above, have received 190,396 jabs. About 104,726 health workers, 30,821 security officers and 52,420 teachers have so far been given the vaccine slightly over a month since the campaign was launched.

The ministry of sports on April 8 kicked off a nationwide Covid-19 vaccination program, targeting to administer the jab to about 3,500 sportsmen and women as a mandatory requirement for the athletes ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games scheduled to begin on July 23, in Japan.

With a current positivity rate of 14 per cent, Kenya has been reporting an average of 1,146 Coronavirus cases per day even as the government implements stiff regulatory measures to help check the spread of the disease.

In the past four days, the country’s positivity rate has remained high at 16.7 per cent, 13.5 per cent and 20 per cent on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, with a 14.9 per cent being the recorded prevalence rate on Thursday.

On April 8, 1,698 people tested positive for Covid-19 after testing a sample size of 11,352. The total number of confirmed infections in Kenya now stands at 143,063 while cumulated death toll is almost crossing the 3,000 mark a year since the first case was reported in Kenya.

Data from the ministry of health also shows an increase in the number of patients both in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in various hospitals. As of Monday, April 5, about 1,590 patients were admitted in hospitals with 200 in ICU. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the number rose to 205 and 236 patients in the ICU. There were 235 patients in ICU on Thurday, April 8.

According to Africa CDC, Eastern Africa has reported 529,936 Covid-19 positive cases and a total of 9,511 deaths out of 7,259,097 tests administered in the region.
