Kenya Covid-19 death toll rises as 407,000 vaccine doses arrive from UK

Kenya’s total Covid-19 fatalities have reached 4,354 after another four patients succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours, latest data from the Ministry of Health shows.

In the last 24 hours, the country recorded 1,488 new Covid-19 infections, after conducting a tests on 9,773 samples, bringing the total case load to 222,894, and a positivity rate of 15.2 per cent, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said.

Mr Kagwe added that there are 1,970 patients currently admitted in various hospitals across the country while another, 8,408 patients are on the home-based care programme.

A total of 1,814 patients have recovered from the virus, out of which 1,576 were from the home-based care program while 238 were discharged from various health facilities. The total recoveries now stand at 205,912.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has received a total of 817,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine as a contribution of the British government in Kenya’s fight against Covid-19.

Receiving the consignment at the JKIA on Tuesday night, the country’s acting Director General of health Dr Patrick Amoth said that the latest consignment will boost the ongoing vaccination drive and thanked the UK government, WHO, Unicef and other partners for helping in the vaccine deployment plan.

He added that the country is expecting to receive 1.7 million doses of Moderna, 393,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine in the next few weeks, and 1.8 million doses of Pfizer vaccine by next month.

So far Kenya has administered a total of 2,101,403 vaccines doses countrywide.
