Janet Mbugua on mission to sharpen skills of youth advocates

From her book My First Time, to the Inua Dada Foundation, media personality, anchor and actress Janet Mbugua embraces the beauty of feminism.

She founded Inua Dada Foundation envisioning a global community that empowers, upholds the dignity and protects the rights of every girl child.

The initiative was endorsed by First Lady of Kenya Margaret Kenyatta and seeks influence policy as well as advocate for the protection of the rights of the girl child.

They work to identify issues that affect the attendance and performance of primary school girls in Kenya such as the lack of sanitary towels, suitable sanitation facilities and access to basic health care and support services.

She has now started a new project that allows for conversations around motherhood, as well as an advocacy platform that highlights issues faced by mothers and their families.

Most recently Inua Dada Foundation kicked off a youth advocacy program to amplify their voices and equip them with skills to create positive change.

According to Janet, who was recently named an international gender champion, with numerous societal issues such as gender based violence, poverty, period poverty on the rise, there is need for advocates now more than ever.

“When we advocate for something, we are pointing out a problem, suggesting a solution for making it better and asking decision makers to take notice and make changes,” she said.

The organization is seeking to train 250 young advocates by the end of June 2021.

The foundation will mobilize youth advocates, equip them with tools to further their advocacy and closely work with them to amplify their voices and their work.

When it comes to the girl, we all play a part in writing her story. How will you rewrite a girl’s story today to give her an equal chance in life?

Janet Mbugua graces our screens once again with the ‘ReWriteStory’ which airs on Citizen on Sunday 2pm.
