It is your fault, clinicians blame politicians for surge in Covid-19 cases
Kenyan politicians have been insensitive holding rallies that have fueled Covid-19 infections in the country.
The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) Secretary General George Gibore said the country is officially in the fourth wave, grappling with the Delta variant and want the government to tighten containment measures.
“It is remembered that the government predicted when the country was to expect the fourth wave but shockingly they employed a wait and see approach hence did little to mitigate it,” Mr Gibore said.
The country has been witnessing large political rallies in the past one month in total violation of a ban on gatherings.
Healthcare facilities in Kenya are experiencing lack of capacity to admit and handle high number of emergency cases of Covid-19 patients, a situation attributed to poor staffing, limited ICU beds, insufficient oxygen supply and inadequate and inappropriate protective gear, the clinicians said.

“We have failed to grow our testing capacity two years down the road, contact tracing is no longer done, follow up for home based care, quarantine and isolation are now bygone cases,” noted KUCO chairman Peterson Wachira.
Their outcry comes just a day after Health CS Mutahi kagwe cautioned politicians against holding political gatherings, urging counties to ensure that there is sufficient and properly piped oxygen plants as the Covid-19 cases begin surge.
Meanwhile the country registered 1,068 positive cases from a sample size of 7,398 tested in the last 24 hours marking a positivity rate of 14.4 per cent.
The Ministry Health in a statement on Thursday said the total confirmed positive cases are now 201,009 with cumulative tests so far conducted at 2,116,979.
At the same time 15 patients succumbed to the virus, all of them being late deaths reported after conducting facility record audits on diverse dates in the months of June and July. This now pushes the cumulative fatalities to 3,910.
398 patients have recovered from the virus bringing the total recoveries to 188,222. Another 1,434 patients are currently admitted to various health facilities countrywide.
