Internet link, computer lab leaves smiles on faces of Nakuru students
It is a new dawn for students of Keriko Mixed Secondary School in Nakuru County.
The school’s over 200 students are the beneficiaries of a donation of ICT infrastructure valued at about Kes 1.7 million from Safaricom Foundation.
The foundation also constructed and equipped the school’s library.
In the deal, tech giant Safaricom joined hands with Global Teacher Prize winner, Peter Tabichi, to equip the school with computers as well as to provide internet connectivity.
Part of the investment went into refurbishing the school’s computer laboratory.
Further, the institution’s staffroom also got an integrated learning and research platform.

Peter Tabichi was cited as one of the Top 100 most influential Africans by New African magazine moments after he won the Global Teacher Prize 2019.
Mr Tabichi has been mentoring students of the school through various initiatives which has seen the number of students going to university increase significantly.
The Safaricom Foundation is also supporting over four million students, enabling learning from home through Shupavu 291, in partnership with Eneza Education under the foundation’s programmes in education sector.
“Within the education pillar, we aim to improve literacy and numeracy among children aged six to 16 years old and provide relevant learning materials that enhance their learning spaces,” said Safaricom Foundation Ndoto Zetu initiative chairman Joe Ogutu during the handover of a science laboratory in Kibra in May.
Further, Safaricom Foundation is also rolling out a literacy and numeracy program in partnership with with Zizi Afrique Foundation in Turkana, Tana River and Bungoma counties where at least 7,000 pupils are set to acquire literacy and numeracy skills.
Further the programme seeks to promote access to technical and vocational education for young people by liaising with employers, development partners, government agencies as well as accreditation providers through a holistic Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program, Mr Ogutu noted
Safaricom, through its philanthropic arm, Safaricom Foundation had recently constructed and equipped the school’s library.
