Artistes turn heat on each other over Ruto meeting

A forum organized at the weekend by a section of Kenyan artistes to meet with Deputy President William Ruto to address the toll caused by Covid-19 curbs on their trade is leaving some of their colleagues unimpressed.

About a week ago, Dr Ruto proposed to host representatives from the entertainment sector after various singers and creatives led by rapper Khaligraph Jones said the Coronavirus economic fallout has hit them hard, destabilizing their industry and lives.

Starting the debate was rapper Octopizzo, who took to twitter describing the attendees as opportunists.

So ‘Covid’ imefanya ‘wasanii’ wakue opportunists. Niliwashow hizi watu ni mambleina wote mkadhani ni jokes sasa ona?????? Hizi ni gani.” he said.

Seconding Octopizzo was female rapper Noti Flow, who went ahead to call out the artists for wasting a good opportunity to sit down with the Deputy President discussing irrelevant matters instead of coming up with ways to deal with the high rate of unemployment among the youth.

“We want something substantial for the people; like jobs for the youths, to sustain them in the long run. These artists should stop being sell-outs, so cheap. Think about the millions of people suffering underground and not just yourselves. Selfish like the politicians, #theydontreallycareaboutus,” she retorted.

On the contrary, according to comedian, DJ Shiti, all the hate and malice was not necessary but instead the industry should come together as mentors and not bringing each other down.

Dr Ruto disclosed the details of the meeting in a series of tweets.

“In our meeting, we discussed the possibility of coming up with a policy that will help weed out the bureaucracy, brokers and impediments that slow down the growth of the industry.”

“I offered to ensure that their recommendations and proposals are forwarded to the National Emergency Response Committee on coronavirus” said Dr Ruto.
