In Brief

Safaricom Ethiopia CEO Anwar Souza term ends

As soon as his secondment is through, Anwar Soussa, the current CEO of Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC, will resign from the company effective July 31, 2023.

Anwar joined Safaricom Ethiopia in August 2021 to oversee organizational development, business operations, and the rollout of a top-notch network.

Anwar, the first CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, oversaw the achievement of important milestones in a very dynamic environment, including bringing the team on board and successfully establishing commercial operations of the second telco business in Africa’s second-most populated nation.

Over 4 million subscribers have joined Safaricom Ethiopia under Anwar’s leadership, and the network currently serves 50 urban areas and more than 25 percent of the country’s population.

Additionally, under Anwar’s direction, Safaricom Ethiopia obtained a license for mobile banking services, opening the door for the introduction of M-PESA services, a statement by Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said.
