Kenya to unveil green ammonia factory at COP28

President William Ruto has announced a $1 billion deal between Kenya and Fortescue Future Industries Development to build a 300MW capacity green ammonia and fertilizer facility in the Naivasha vicinity of the Olkaria geothermal field.

Dr Ruto announced the signing of Kes151 billion investment on fertilizer and 5 other countries including USA and Australia on the upcoming #COP28 during the Kenya Innovation Week 2023.

The 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, more commonly referred to as COP28, will be the 28th United Nations Climate Change conference, held from 30 November until 12 December 2023, at the Expo City, in Dubai.

The conference has been held annually since the first UN climate agreement in 1992. The forum brings together policymakers from governments are key stakeholders to agree on policies to limit global temperature rises and adapt to impacts associated with climate change.

Kenya among other countries will be launching the African Green Industrialization Initiative. The aim of this will be to mobilise resources for industrialization using Green Energy. “This will be graced by the geothermal resources to be able to manufacture fertiliser for us in Kenya,’’ said Dr Ruto.

The COP28 will help align the efforts on climate action, including measures that need to be put in place to bridge the gaps in progress.
