County staff quizzed on undeclared Sh2.7 million at airport

Mariam Abdalla Bunu, who is the acting chief officer for finance, in Tana River County was arrested by anti-graft officials at Malindi airport for travelling with undeclared Kes2.7 million in cash.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission said it is suspecting that the cash, which Ms Bunu was unable to explain to officers at the airport could have been corruptly obtained from the county government coffers.

The EACC said it was investigating the officer for suspected embezzlement of public funds, abuse of office, and dealing with suspect property. The commission also said it would carry out a lifestyle audit on the Chief Officer to ascertain whether she had unexplained assets.

Ms Bunu, who is also one of the candidates shortlisted for Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) posts, was however set free on a Kes100,000 cash bail pending further investigations.
