Budget top agenda as Parliament resumes
With a supplementary budget for the fiscal year 2022/23 and President William Ruto’s 2023/24 spending plan to consider, the in-tray is full for the second session of the 13th Parliament which resumed on Tuesday, February 14, following end year holidays.
“I urge you to [work hard], especially in light of the priority business before us in this part of the session being the supplemental estimate for the financial estimate for the financial year 2022-2023, the upcoming budget policy statement, and the Medium Term Debt Management strategy,” the Speaker Moses Wetangula noted in his opening speech to the legislators.
“This and other budget-related matters will remain at the top of our agenda between now and June 2023.”
Yesterday’s session also saw the introduction of two new parliamentarians who recently got elected to replace former MPs who took positions in the Cabinet. Mr Dekow Barrow Mohamed and Mr Chege Njuguna, the newly elected MPs for Garissa Township and Kandara constituencies were elected in by-elections held last month to replace Mr Aden Duale and Ms Alice Wahome, who became Defense and Water Cabinet Secretaries, respectively.
