Kenya runs out of Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccine stocks

The Health Ministry has decried the decline in the stock of COVID-19 vaccines in the country, especially the Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines which, according to the ministry, are totally out of stock.

This comes barely a week after the country announced that it had close to 10 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines in her stores, some of them with a fast approaching expiry date.

Dr Andrew Mulwa, who is the acting Director of Medical Services said currently there are a total of 3.5 million vaccines at the central stores, 3.5 million doses at the regional stores and about 2.5 million doses at the county stores.

Dr Mulwa however noted that the country is expecting about 8 million Pfizer vaccine doses from the US through COVAX and 12 million Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

Meanwhile, Kenya is also among the six countries that are going to receive 3.55 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from Thailand following an approval by the World Health Organization.

So far, over 15 million vaccines have been administered across the country. Of these, over 7 million are partially vaccinated while those fully vaccinated are over 6 million.

Another 674,951 are doses administered to those between 15 to 17 years while 223,685 are booster doses.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health also shows that 6.9 million adults are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 63.1 percent and the proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 25.5 percent.

“The Government is working towards vaccinating a targeted population of 27,246,033,” Mr Kagwe said.

Earlier in the month, the ministry had launched a 10-day mass vaccination drive targeting at least 10 million people in 10 days, a target which unfortunately was not met.
