You can now get Pfizer jab as special syringes arrive
Kenya is set to roll out the administration of Pfizer vaccinations against Covid-19 after receiving the full consignment of special syringes for the exercise nearly two weeks after getting millions of vaccines from the US.
Nearly 800,000 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine arrived in Kenya mid-September before a second shipment of 210,600 doses arrived by the end of last month.
“Pfizer uses the diluent which is used to make the vaccine. Also, the syringe is made in a way that ensures it sucks every single dose from the vial,” Kenya’s Covid-19 vaccine deployment taskforce chairman Dr Willis Akhwale said.
The final batch of special syringes to be used for Pfizer vaccines administration arrived in Kenya at the weekend, completing the batch of 2.2 million special syringes from the US.

“If you use the ordinary syringe you will lose a dose per vial and that like the ones we got we would have lost 32,000. It makes sure no vaccine remains,” Dr Akhwale noted.
As of Saturday, just over 3.8 million vaccines had been administered across the country.
With these, over 2.9 million were partially vaccinated while those fully vaccinated were 929,499 people.
The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose was at 31.6 per cent while the proportion of adults fully vaccinated was 3.4 per cent.
The government plans to vaccinate a population of over 27 million people.
