Covid-19: Kenya’s positivity rate up to 13.1 per cent
The country’s positivity rate increased to 13.1 per in the last 24 hours after 762 people tested positive for COVID-19.
The total confirmed infections are now at 189,703 and cumulative tests so far conducted are 2,023,807.
Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, in a statement said 71 patients recovered from the disease; 45 from the home-based isolation and care, while 26 were discharged from various health facilities countrywide. Total recoveries rose to 180,624.
At the same time, the CS noted that nine patients succumbed to the virus, all of them being late deaths reported after conducting facility record audits in April and June 2021. This pushed the cumulative fatalities to 3,732.
The new cases were recorded across various counties namely; Nairobi 189, Kisumu 133, Laikipia 104, Uasin Gishu 45, Nakuru 35, Mombasa 35, Kiambu 27, Kitui 23, Garissa 20, Kilifi 18, Busia 18, Siaya 14, Taita Taveta 14, Murang’a 8, Machakos 8, Isiolo 7, Vihiga 7, Kirinyaga 6, Makueni 6, Kisii 6, Kwale 6, Bungoma 5, Kericho 5, Nyamira 5, Embu 2, Hama Bay 2, Kajiado 2, Kakamega 2, Narok 2, Nyandarua 2, Nyeri, Baringo, Bomet, Elgeyo Marakwet and Meru recorded a case each.
“A total of 1,067 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 4,359 are under the home based Isolation and care program. 123 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 38 of whom are on ventilatory support and 65 on supplemental oxygen,” read the statement.
“20 patients are under observation. Another 218 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 196 of them in general wards and 22 in High Dependency Units.”

Meanwhile, Muruku Secondary School in Laikipia County has come under the spotlight after 99 students and four teachers tested positive for COVID-19.
According to Laikipia Chief Officer for Medical Services and Health Dr Donald Mugoi, three teachers have been put on isolation at the Ol-Jabet Medical Centre and another at St Benedict Hospital.
Dr Mugoi further stated that the affected students, 40 boys and 59 girls, are in isolation at the school.
On vaccination, the CS stated that a total of 1,550,389 vaccines have so far been administered with total first doses being 1,028,669 while second shots are 521,720.
The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 50.7 per cent with the majority being males at 55 per cent while females are at 45 per cent. Proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2 per cent.
The uptake of the second dose by priority groups is as follows: aged 58 years and above 161,165; others 147,765; health workers 99,289; teachers 72,294; while security officers are at 41,207.
