Kenya records 904 Covid-19 cases, positivity rate at 16 per cent

Barely a month to the projected lifting of the ongoing Covid-19 curbs, Kenya’s Coronavirus positivity rate remains high even as counties call for more testing.

In the last 24-hour period, Kenya has recorded 904 positive cases from a sample of 5,673, posting a 16 per cent positivity rate. This now brings the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country to 154,392.

From the case, 519 are males and 385 are females. The youngest is a two-month-old baby, and the oldest is 97 years old.

Nairobi County still tops the list of the most affected recording a total of 288, followed by Mombasa at 88, Meru 54, and Nakuru at 32. Nyeri and Lamu counties recorded the lowest numbers with one case each.

The Ministry of Health announced 20 more deaths with seven occurring on various dates within the last month and thirteen being late deaths recorded through hospital record audits. This now brings the total number of fatalities to 2,560.

However, 88 patients have recovered from the virus in the last 24-hour period; 12 from home-based and isolation care, and the remaining 76 from different health facilities. Total recoveries stand at 105,367.

The ministry also said there are 226 patients in the ICU, 52 of who require ventilator support and 144 require supplemental oxygen.

Meanwhile, over 700,000 people in Kenya have received their first shot of the AstraZeneca coronavirus shot as of April 22. Out of this, 446,329 are senior citizens aged 58 years and above, 148,358 are health workers, 119,161 are teachers while 64,406 are security officers.

Plans are underway by the government to order a million doses each of Pfizer-BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson vaccines to supplement the AtraZeneca vaccine which is currently facing supply hitches.
