Top employers will need to take care of employees in 2023

With high inflation, job culls and slower economies, businesses will have to focus on employee welfare to be successful amidst all the uncertainties of 2023.

Last year the Top Employer Institute predicted that organizations that would create a working environment in which employees are deeply involved in the design of almost everything within the organizations, where people ability enabled by technology is a given, with the freedoms created by new working environments balanced by safeguards would be most successful.

While employers entered 2022 recovering from Covid-19 shocks, Ukraine-Russia war; this year presents new challenges including high cost of goods and threats of recession.

These twin challenges are set to hit employee pockets and drive clamour for higher pay even as businesses are struggling to increase incomes.

Organizations that will have clearer communication channels, deeply involve employees and address welfare concerns will have the best chances of weathering the new storms. These are workplace trends that will enable businesses to truly deliver a better world of work.

Top Employer Institute has certified 14 Kenyan organisations including Absa Bank, DHL, Huawei, Unilever, Novartis, and Nestle among the top employers in Kenya after assessing 6 HR domains consisting of 20 topics including People Strategy, Work Environment, Talent Acquisition, Learning, Well-being and Diversity & Inclusion and more.

Being certified as a Top Employer showcases an organisation’s dedication to a better world of work and exhibits this through excellent HR policies and people practices.

“This achievement places Absa Kenya amongst a prestigious group of companies that are globally recognized for excellence in supporting employee growth and innovation,” Absa acting managing Director Yusuf Omari said last year after the lenders’ certification.

“It is a great testament that our strategy on transforming our workplace and evolving our ways of working is sound, and underlines one of our core values at Absa, which is that ‘Our People are our Strength’. We recognize the critical role our colleagues play in ensuring that our customers enjoy a great banking experience from us, and we are committed to create a working environment that allows them to thrive.”

Top Employer Institute urged companies to maintain excellent people practices in the workplace as the best way to meet the challenges of the changing world of work while working tirelessly to make a positive impact on the lives of their workforce.
