Safaricom renews in-country cloud services

Tech giant Safaricom has introduced an enhanced incountry cloud computing platform and a suite of associated services, aimed at facilitating the digital transformation of businesses and organizations.

This move is designed to provide these entities with increased operational flexibility and resilience in response to an ever-evolving business landscape.

The newly unveiled cloud services, hosted within data centers located in Nairobi and Kisumu, are underpinned by VMware technologies, known for their reliability and performance.

Cloud computing resources

Among the array of added capabilities, customers now have the flexibility to deploy their applications and allocate cloud computing resources through a unified interface. This streamlined approach empowers customers to procure cloud computing resources in bulk and tailor their cloud environment to align seamlessly with their unique business application requirements.

Cynthia Karuri-Kropac, Chief Enterprise Business Officer at Safaricom, singled out the transformative potential of this initiative for businesses, characterizing it as a catalyst for innovation and growth.

She highlighted the company’s vision of empowering businesses with world-class cloud computing capabilities, enabling them to unlock new opportunities and navigate the digital age more efficiently and cost-effectively.

Ms Karuri-Kropac further noted that this launch is in alignment with Safaricom’s commitment to fostering digital transformation in Kenya, bringing the company closer to its goal of evolving into a purpose-led technology enterprise by the conclusion of 2025.

Safaricom’s cloud services extend the promise of flexibility to enterprise customers, allowing them to expand their operations by harnessing computing resources in a scalable manner, all while adhering to operational expenditure (OPEX) models.

Additionally, these services empower businesses to conduct their operations from anywhere with the assurance of high availability, thereby ensuring the reliability of services delivered to their end customers.

Seamless payment integration

Notably, Safaricom’s cloud services also encompass secure hosting provisions for business applications, with a strict adherence to data residency regulations. Moreover, the platform facilitates secure connectivity and seamless payment integrations for business applications hosted within the cloud environment, further enhancing the overall operational security.

The Safaricom Cloud as a service initiative traces its origins back to 2010 when it started operations by offering Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) with consumption based on Virtual Machines and Managed Services, as opposed to a Self-Service model.

This evolution underscores Safaricom’s ongoing commitment to advancing the technology landscape in Kenya and empowering businesses with the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world.
