MultiChoice tells off contractor on building demolition plan

Entertainment provider MultiChoice Kenya is bringing down a building it had designated as its head office in Nairobi’s Kileleshwa area due to safety concerns.

The building along Oloitoktok Road in Kileleshwa, which is valued at roughly Kes1 billion, has been at the centre of a controversy pitting the contractor, Cementers Limited, and MultiChoice Kenya.

MultiChoice Kenya said the move is in line with enforcement notices issued by the County Government of Nairobi condemning the said building and requiring its immediate demolition.

“As a law abiding citizen, MultiChoice Kenya is complying with the said Notice in cooperation with and assistance of the relevant authorities. The exercise is being carried out with utmost professionalism and care to the workers involved and the communities neighbouring the site,” the company said in a statement.

At the moment, Cementers Ltd is protesting MultiChoice plan to invite bids for “a project manager to oversee and manage its upcoming project of demolishing its building situated along Oloitoktok Road at Kileleshwa, Nairobi.”

The notice gave a deadline of midday on Friday, 18 February, 2022 for responses to the request for quotations.

“We note the use of deliberately misleading media statements to misrepresent our lawful compliance with this demolition order to cast aspersions on MultiChoice Kenya, these claims are strongly denied and have no basis in fact,” MultiChoice explained.

MultiChoice added that the structure’s demolition has nothing to do with the ongoing legal matter between MultiChoice Kenya and Cementers Ltd.

The demolition of the building is not subject to those proceedings and any false accusations made against MultiChoice Kenya are libelous and will be addressed through legal recourse, the entertainment company added.

Cementers Ltd, however, said that the building may be required in evidence in a criminal case and it would therefore be a criminal for anyone to destroy it. Similarly, the firm is putting on notice any potential buyers of the said structure.
