KRA TV hits the airwaves to drive tax literacy

If you have been struggling to keep pace with understanding changes in Kenya’s tax system, the taxman is coming to your aid through regular TV programming starting Monday, 3rd October.

The web-based station is envisioned to enhance tax literacy in the country through the dissemination of simplified tax and customs content to the public.

Its launch, which is part of the taxman’s activities in the taxpayers’ month of October, is aimed at enhancing voluntary tax compliance and enhancing the tax base in the country.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has been singled out for reforms to help enhance compliance even as it sets out to enhance revenue collections. This week, President William Ruto backed the Treasury’s proposal to change its name to Kenya Revenue Service to make it customer-centric.

“We will also work with the KRA on a culture change to make it a people-friendly, customer-centric organisation. I am of the view that we should rename it the Kenya Revenue Service in line with the proposed transformation,” President Ruto said at the opening of the 13th Parliament.

The “KRA TV” platform will be hosted on KRA website and drive a demand-based viewership, the taxman noted.

The station will host customized tax content that the public may consume at their convenience. The key features on the Tv will include: scheduled live programming of tax awareness initiatives such as Tax Talks, Tax Thursdays, Stori za Ushuru and other programs.

The TV station will also air a wide range of simplified and downloadable content for various taxpayer categories among the many other programmes.

Taxpayers’ Month is usually organized to appreciate compliant taxpayers for their patriotic act of dutifully remitting their taxes.

During the month, KRA will engage in taxpayer appreciation engagements, taxpayer education, tax summit event and Corporate Social Investment (CSI) activities. The event will be culminated by a Taxpayers Award Ceremony and Luncheon hosted in honour of distinguished taxpayers.

This year’s Taxpayers Month is themed ‘Leaving no one behind’ to amplify the collective role and contribution of all Kenyans towards economic progress as a nation.
