Jumia Food spices offerings with free deliveries on Mondays

Jumia Food customers will enjoy free delivery services every Monday as the online shopping company moves to shore up its presence in the Kenyan market.

Apart from helping reduce person-to-person interaction as part of the measures to check the spread of Covid-19, the new development is aimed at encouraging even more consumers to support restaurants.

Head of Commercial Jumia Food Kenya, Valentine Kainyu, said consumers will get free delivery from a range of restaurants and supermarkets.

Jumia Food is excited to offer free delivery every Monday on the Jumia Food App. We hope that this will not only brighten our consumer’s Mondays but also cheer them up, as we also support our restaurants to stay in business,” she said.

Household items such as sugar, maize flour, and cooking oil were the most ordered products on Jumia, as Kenya’s online shopping trends shift to everyday products.

Statistics by the Jumia Africa e-commerce Index 2021 showed that fast-moving consumer goods and beauty products accounted for 57 percent of goods sold on the platform last year by value, an increase from 44 percent in 2019.

The food delivery segment in Kenya is gaining traction with new entrants providing customers with choice.

Bolt Food, launched in Kenya in 2020 amid COVID-19 pandemic when online ordering and delivery took an upward trajectory due to stay at home orders.

Other food delivery apps in Kenya include Glovo, which launched in Kenya in 2019, and Uber Eats, which was launched in Kenya in 2018.

“I don’t think we at Jumia are interested in size. That’s good for ego, but that’s not really useful,” Jumia co-founder Jeremy Hodara said on Wednesday. “I think what we care about is to last very long as a successful business and to be here in 100 years,” he said.

Shopping online has become a norm in the digital age, offering consumers unrivaled convenience.

Most vendors have also diversified their trade to include online ordering and delivery.

The same goes for eateries who are now able to package and dispatch hot meals to customers within minutes.
