Canon’s virtual film school on set to boost Africa’s film industry
In a bid to further the cause of education and economic empowerment in Africa’s nascent film industry, tech giant Canon has unveiled a virtual film school, The Canon Academy Video.
Canon’s virtual film school is billed to raise the bar by offering the latest technology and practices in film-making education in Africa.
The virtual school augments other investments under the multinational including Canon Academy Photo which focuses on the art of photography and Canon Academy Juniors which helps children to master visual arts skills.
Canon says the initiative will empower cinematographers, filmmakers, and videographers by delivering an online film school with educational content, insights, and guidance from industry experts, tips, and tricks on using Canon products for film-making, and much more.

The platform, which is currently available in English and French and virtually mimics the actual working of a cinematographer, videographer, or filmmaker in a physical production setting, has courses delivered through e-learning, and face-to-face learning experiences and workshops.
In a bid to create a compelling online experience, Canon Video Academy will focus on three main areas: pre-production, production, and post-production.
The pre-production suite will guide learners to understand how to create storyboards, and setting budgets and project timelines among other undertakings at this stage.
The production studio will lay emphasis on lighting and camera control techniques, while the post-production suite will take a user through editing and sound-mixing during production.
The virtual school also offers detailed insights on Canon cameras, and the best tips and tricks to use them, in the ‘Kit room,’ while its ‘theatre room’ will be a go-to place to access information about Canon’s latest equipment, upcoming events, and masterclasses.
The second phase will include enhancements to the platform based on learners’ feedback and physical workshops where content related to what is available on the platform will be delved into more deeply.
The initiative is currently accessible to anyone and everyone in Africa, making the platform accessible to those who are yearning to learn about film-making.
