Carrefour takes up space left by ailing Tuskys in Embakasi

Al Futtaim backed retail giant Carrefour Kenya has opened a new outlet at Embakasi’s Southfield Mall, taking up the space left by debt saddled Tuskys.

The new location will be Carrefour’s twelfth branch in Nairobi and will also serve customers from neighboring Syokimau, Nyayo Estate as well as Imara Daima estates.

“We are happy to have a new addition in Nairobi as we continue to expand countrywide,” noted Carrefour Kenya manager Frank Moreau.

The retail giant noted that by December, the Embakasi store will become hypermarket complete with non-food assortment of products.

The new store, which is expected to give rise to 325 jobs, occupies 3,000 square meters of space on two floors.

In October last year, troubled Tuskys had three of its outlets—North Airport Road’s Kencor Petrol Station, Embakasi (Tuskys Embakasi) and Tuskys Komarock Mall (K-Mall)—going under the hammer as landlords sought to recover rent arrears.

Tuskys has been struggling with debts owed to suppliers amounting to slightly over Kes6 billion.
