Carrefour is taking active initiatives to support poor Kenyans clobbered by COVID-19

It is true that this pandemic has arbitrated a destruction spree that has left much of the country’s economy terrorized. But it is poor Kenyans who may suffer the worst.

Much of the economy is in a state of paralysis ushering in an avalanche of other problems ranging from brutal job cuts, shaken daily routines, and lost output thanks to lockdown life.

Low-income households are quickly losing the tenuous dignity that their lives of hard work had afforded them. This pandemic has proven to be worse than any other fallout they have seen before.

We also know for a fact that food insecurity will be a certainty. But while rich Kenyans and middle-income households can in some way cushion themselves, poor ones may be staring into the abyss.

Mr. Franck Moreau, Country Manager of Carrefour Kenya puts it so well when he says that giving back to those in need and being there for the community is an integral part of any business.

In an initiative that will be directly spearheaded by Carrefour and the Kenya Red Cross, hungry households living near any of the seven Carrefour stores in the country will receive a donation that consists of maize meal, rice, sugar, cooking oil and other food items for the next one month.

The stores which are operated by the Majid Al Futtaim global retail empire, are already a go-to spot for thousands of Kenyan shoppers.

Mr. Franck Moreau is encouraging shoppers to chip in by donating food hampers and dropping them in the donation boxes, located in each of the seven Carrefour stores in Kenya. Carrefour will contribute a food hamper, for every 10 donated by its customers.

On her part, Dr. Asha Mohammed, Secretary-General of Kenya Red Cross Society says that unless the most vulnerable families are supported, we cannot defeat this pandemic.
