More than 2.5 Million Taxpayers file their 2017 Tax Returns

More than 2.5 Million taxpayers have filed their 2017 income tax returns on the iTax platform, with less than two days left before the exercise officially comes to a close on Saturday 30th June 2018.
Kenya Revenue Authority’s (KRA) Taxpayer Education officer Nicholas Mutembei (left) guides wardens from Lang’ata Women’s Maximum Security Prison file their 2017 tax returns during an on-location filing assistance exercise at the correctional facility in Lang’ata yesterday. On-location filing is one of the approaches KRA has been employing to facilitate taxpayers file their tax returns in good time during the filing season.
This is a significant improvement compared to last year when 1.76 million individuals filed their tax returns, for both resident and non-resident categories, by the deadline.
The marked improvement is attributed to efficiency of the iTax platform and the increased awareness campaign undertaken by Kenya Revenue Authority encouraging the early filing of returns as well as on-site filing assistance that KRA has been extending to organizations countrywide.
KRA urges taxpayers who are yet to submit their returns to do so to avoid the rush close to the deadline that has been witnessed in previous fiscal years. KRA officials will be stationed in all the 38 service centers and the 51 KRA Huduma Centres countrywide on Saturday. Apart from the Service and Huduma Centres, taxpayers can also visit KRA regional offices countrywide for any assistance.
In the spirit of building taxpayers’ trust as stipulated in our mission statement, KRA is committed to facilitating all taxpayers, especially during these last two days. Taxpayers who encounter challenges in filing returns are encouraged to reach KRA through the national contact center for more assistance on [email protected] or +254 (020) 4999 999. The center is open every day until midnight.
The penalty for late submission of an income tax return for an individual is KSh. 20,000 as stipulated in the Tax Procedures Act 2015.
