Duale tightens noose on 145 firms polluting Nairobi River
An estimated 145 companies could soon find themselves entangled in murky waters with authorities edging closer to closing them for dumping waste into the Nairobi River.
According to the Ministry of Environment, the National Management Authority (NEMA) has fingered these companies for discharging waste contrary to the provisions of the Environmental Management and Coordination Water Quality Regulations 2006.
“NEMA has already mapped out 145 facilities discharging waste into the river, 101 of which have compliance issues. We have issued restoration orders, and all non-compliant facilities must now treat their wastewater according to national standards or face closure,” said Aden Duale, the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Environment.
The CS added that the greatest threat facing Nairobi River is the dumping of sewerage and other solid waste. He noted that sewer lines run by Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) and Athi River and Sewerage Company often dump waste into the river.
“I wish to note that waste collection, dumping, and management is a devolved function and the ministry, through NEMA, works closely with county governments to ensure sustainable waste management,” he remarked, adding: “The President and I have given Nema the necessary political will to deal with issues of the environment which was lacking.”

He further cautioned against political interference, stating: “I ask you as MPs not to call me when we decide to deal with environmental polluters. I will be going after them and let no MP call me to seek assistance when I deal with polluters.”
Mr Duale’s strategy is part of the broader Climate WorX initiative, which was launched this week by the President in partnership with the African Development Bank. It aims at enhancing Nairobi’s sewerage system, addressing pollution from industries and households, and promoting sustainability.
Climate WorX initiative projects to engage 200,000 youth in various environmental activities, including tree planting and solid waste management. According to Mr Duale, 10,000 youths already started cleaning Nairobi River since Monday this week.
Already, some illegal dumpsites have been closed including Sunken Car Park, Globe Roundabout, Taveta Lane, and Ngenda in Starehe Sub County.
