Permutations and predictions of Group A and Group B of the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup

After one and a half weeks of non- stop football, the FIFA World Cup enters its midway stage. All teams have played two group games, and some teams have already been knocked while others are preparing for the knockout stages. From today Monday 25th June 2018 to Thursday 28th, every day two groups will play their final two games in unison. The reason for this to avoid a situation such as the Sporting Disgrace of Gijon we highlighted in an earlier post, whereby two teams played out a mutually beneficial result because they knew the result of an earlier game.

The video-assisted referee (VAR), according to a Telegraph article, is meant to assist the referee to make decisions that may have skipped his attention during a match, or correct the wrong ones he makes. The Russia world cup is the first world cup ever to use VAR. There are only four things that the VAR can be brought in to use, goals, penalties, straight red cards and my personal favorite, mistaken identity. (Arsenal fans with long memories will remember a game against Chelsea where the referee, Andre Marriner, sent off Kieran Gibbs instead of Alex Oxlade Chamberlain)
