Fact-Check

ALTERED: This isn’t People Daily’s front cover for 10 October 2024

The publication has dismissed the fabricated headline

This post on X (formerly Twitter) bearing an image purportedly of the front cover of People Daily dated 10 October, 2024 is ALTERED.

The post’s caption reads, “Gachagua resigns in last minute move to avoid impeachment” and is captioned, ‘Half Term DP #Gachagua Resigns to avoid being impeached by the Senate. This will bar him from vying for any elective seat bearing in mind that he will be impeached as well by the Senate. Kama mbaya mbaya.”

The claim has also been published here

The cover was shared two days after Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was impeached  by the National Assembly in a vote that saw the matter proceed to the Senate. Gachagua is expected to appear at the Senate on 16 October 2024 for the hearing of his impeachment motion.

Maudhui House reviewed People Daily’s official social media pages on  X and Facebook and established that it did not make such a publication on 10 October 2024.

Instead, we found this post by the publication stating, “We would like to inform the public that the following publication is fake and did not originate from the People Daily.”

Furthermore, the image has been manipulated and can clearly be seen upon comparison with the original publication that was the front cover for the People Daily for Wednesday, 9 October  2024.

Additionally, on checking the archive of People Daily where the publisher saves all e-paper publications, we established that the media organisation did not publish its newspaper on 10th October, 2024, which was a public holiday in Kenya.

Maudhui House looked into an X post with an image purporting to be the front cover of the People Daily dated 10 October 2024,  and found it to be ALTERED.
