ALTERED: This video isn’t of Ruto nominating Duale for deputy president

The video is of President Ruto’s address on 3 May 2024 when the country was expecting cyclone Hidaya to make landfall at the Kenyan Coast.

This video circulating on TikTok purporting that President William Ruto has nominated the Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Climate Aden Duale for the post of Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya is ALTERED.

The video purports to show President Ruto stating in part, “I nominate the Hon. Aden Barre Duale for serving as Deputy President for consideration and approval by the National Assembly…”

As of 14 October 2024, Rigathi Gachagua is the holder of the position of Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya. 

Gachagua is, however, facing impeachment proceedings at the Senate after lawmakers in the National Assembly voted in support of a motion to impeach him on Tuesday, 8 October 2024.

A reverse image search shows the original video was first published by Citizen Digital (see screengrab below) as President Ruto spoke on 3 May 2024 when the country was expecting cyclone Hidaya to make landfall on the coast. 

To add on, Duale is the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Environment, and Climate Change. He has not acknowledged being nominated by the President for consideration for the post of Deputy President. Previously, upon nomination, Mr Duale publicly acknowledged such appointments as seen here, and here.

Furthermore, a timeline check on President William Ruto’s X (formerly Twitter) account and the X account of State House Kenya did not yield any communication from the presidency regarding the nomination of Duale for consideration for the post of Deputy President.

Since the motion and proceedings to impeach the Deputy President started in the National Assembly, President Ruto has not been quoted speaking in public about the matter so far.

Gachagua is expected to appear at the Senate on 16 October 2024 for the hearing of his impeachment motion, after which the Senate will determine his fate.
