Mombasa Road repairs to be completed September 2024

Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen says Mombasa Road repairs will be completed in one-and-a-half years, blaming the construction of the Expressway for the disrepair that has seen sections of the roads flood on the onset of rains.

CS Murkomen said they have enlisted contractors for the repair but will dispatch Kenya National Highways Authority to undertake drainage works along the road.

Construction of the 27.1-km Nairobi expressway financed and built by China Road and Bridge Corporation for $600 million under a public-private partnership model has left the old road with sections without drainage, blocking pedestrians but offering few footbridges in most sections and confusing road markings.

Former Transport CS James Macharia said last year the previous government had hired a contractor to rehabilitate the road for Kes9 billion which has failed to materialize even as the new administration freezes most road projects on budget cuts.

Mombasa road is one of East Africa’s major arteries forming the Northern corridor that connects Kenya’s port of Mombasa to regional nations of Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan and DRC.
