A multi-agency security team has intercepted explosives in a bus bound for Meru on Tuesday during a routine patrol on Kanyonyo-Embu section of the road.
Security officers seized a carton box bearing a milk brand logo but had 10 water gel explosives marked EXPLOGEL V6, one detonating cord, and two IDEAL electric detonators.
“The discovery came during a meticulous search that revealed a medium-sized white carton, branded with LATO Milk logos. Inside, authorities discovered a dangerous haul: ten water gel explosives labelled EXPLOGEL V6, one detonating cord, and two IDEAL electric detonators,” reads part of the DCI’s statement.
After the discovery, the bus was swiftly escorted to Kanyonyo Police Station, where the driver, Lawrance Kioko Mutuku, and the conductor, Said Rashid Amour, were taken into custody.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), forensic investigations led detectives from the Anti-Terrorist Police Unit (ATPU) and Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) to the main suspect, Brenda Imboyanga Makhulungu, who was apprehended in Mundutsu village in Kakamega County.
The Detectives identified Brenda Imboyanga Makhulungu who comes from Kakamega County as the main suspect. It is reported that Brenda, who registered the package, had labeled the explosives as “Dawa ya Maji” at Tahmeed’s office in Kakamega.
"Brenda, the registered sender of the package, declared the explosives as "Dawa ya Maji" at Tahmeed's Kakamega office, orchestrating its journey from Kakamega to Mombasa and then to the Meru-bound bus via Kitui," according to police.
DCI also stated that the investigation widened, leading to the arrest of two more suspects, David Tindi Andala and John Kariuki Kung'u, who were apprehended in Meru town.
