Kenyans rush for COVID-19 jab as cases rise
The number of Kenyans going for the Covid-19 vaccinations has increased significantly following an upsurge in new infections across the country.
According to the Ministry of Health at least 20,000 people are being vaccinated daily across the country, an increase from an average of 3,000 in the last three months when the infections dropped.
Statistics from the Ministry show that 24,798 people were vaccinated on Wednesday, and on Tuesday, 23,514 took the jabs. In total, the country has vaccinated 18.3 million people, with 16.5 million being adults.
The government had earlier urged asked citizens to wear masks in public places and get vaccinated following the sharp rise in COVID-19 cases.
“We are urging Kenyans to have their masks on. We are worried that the Covid-19 numbers are going up,” Mr Francis Kuria, the Director of Public Health at the Health Ministry, said.
When lifting some Covid-19 mandates in March, Kenya was recording less than five positive cases per day.
On Thursday, June 9, Kenya recorded 202 positive cases of COVID-19 from a sample size of 2,787, posting a positivity rate of 7.2 percent.
CS Kagwe said the total number of confirmed positive cases is now 326,217 and cumulative tests so far conducted are 3,692,073.
