NCBA’s Sh30 billion plan for greener tomorrow

In a move towards environmental stewardship and sustainability, the NCBA Group is set to mobilize Kes30 billion for green and sustainable financing by 2030. This commitment sets the stage for the financial institution’s proactive participation in the Africa Climate Week (ACW) 2023, scheduled from September 4th to 8th in Nairobi.

The group has rolled out a slate of 15 ambitious commitments to be met by 2030, signaling a shift towards green practices. At the forefront of these commitments is a strategic initiative to plant 10 million trees in partnerships with both private entities and government agencies

Another goal involves the complete elimination of single-use plastic and a concurrent drive to ensure 100 percent waste recycling.

This holistic approach underscores NCBA Group commitment to mitigating environmental impact in its operations. Moreover, the group will actively green its supply chain, creating a ripple effect that extends sustainability efforts.

The listed lender will be enhancing electric mobility by investing in deploying electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the region. This move resonates with the global shift towards cleaner energy solutions and aligns with the broader vision of a greener tomorrow.

NCBA’s sustainable practices

NCBA Group Managing Director, John Gachora, said: “Sustainability is not a new concept to the NCBA Group…observe the effects the drought has had on the country’s economy to appreciate the urgency in taking action.”

The NCBA Group’s strategy involves empowering the public and its customers with knowledge of sustainable practices. To achieve this, the Group is investing in the creation of a “Change the Story” knowledge digital platform.

Additionally, the bank’s workforce of over 3,000 employees will actively engage with their communities to promote sustainable practices. The Group is poised to invest over Kes100 million annually to drive this community engagement initiative.

Already, NCBA Group has officially joined the UN Global Compact, signifying its willingness to be held accountable and transparent in its efforts. An annual report on the progress towards its commitments will further demonstrate the Group’s dedication to its cause.
