Schools get Sh14Bn in capitation after weeks of uncertainty
The Treasury has released Kes14 billion in capitation financing following uproar among school heads who had threatened to pause learning activities from next week should the government fail to disburse the funds.
"The National Treasury on Wednesday released Kes14 billion more towards the school capitation and will be disbursed by today to school accounts. KCB account holders will access it today and the rest by tomorrow," part of the statement read.
The disbursement comes days after principals from the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) expressed concerns about the late disbursement of this term's funding.
Kuppet cited difficulties in running schools after the government delayed in disbursing financing meant for the first term in time.
The teachers’ union said school heads are contemplating to fire support staff in order to cut expenses while some were even facing lawsuits as vendors had gone without pay for long.
Speaking on Thursday in Nairobi, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba noted that the government was about to disburse an additional Kes15 billion in the coming weeks.
The CS urged primary and secondary school head teachers not to send learners home over unpaid fees, saying that the delayed disbursement was due to budgetary constraints.
“We urge principals and head teachers not to send away the students home because we are working day and night to ensure the resources are available,” Ogamba stated.
