Lebanon-based Dar Al-Handasah Consultants tasked to carry out design review, project management and contract administration roles for JKIA upgrade project.
Kenya has contracted a company established in Lebanon to oversee the planned KSh154 billion modernisation plan for the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
According to Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, Dar Al-Handasah Consultants has entered into contract to oversee the expansion construction works that seek to turn JKIA into a modern air travel hub in East Africa.
Dar Al-Handasah Consultants will now carry out design review, project management and contract administration roles for the multi-billion project.
The firm is now tasked with delivering the project according to the set engineering specifications, safety standards, quality requirements, timelines and budget.
“The consultant will provide engineering supervision and project management services for the implementation of the JKIA modernisation project,” CS Chirchir said.
He added: “Their expertise will be instrumental in delivering a modern, efficient, safe, and sustainable airport that meets global standards. This marks the beginning of a critical implementation phase."
With increasing demand for air travel, countries in Africa including Morocco, Rwanda and Ethiopia have entered into ambitious projects to build new airports or modernize existing airports.
Kenya has launched JKIA modernization project to boost trade, tourism and regional connectivity while also opening fresh opportunities for employment.
While Dar Al-Handasah will provide engineering consultancy and oversee the project, the actual construction contract has been awarded to China Road and Bridge Corporation.
