Safaricom’s DigiFarm wins international prize
Safaricom's DigiFarm agri-agribusiness platform has won an award at the 2020 Global Mobile Awards for being the finest Mobile Innovation for Emerging Markets.
The Mobile platform helps farmers scale the production, supply and distribution challenges that prevent them from achieving the full potential of their planting cycles.
Farmers get registered through a *283# USSD number and provide information relating to the nature of their farming operations such as land size, location, and weather conditions.

The information is then collated and matched against scientific data on the best practice that will result in the highest yield.
The idea is to get to a point where a farmer knows what they should plant, where, when and how leveraging on scientific data and not what they have been told by the previous generation of farmers.
Digifarm also has the capability to analyze the data from farmers and subsequently create a supply system where they are guaranteed a market for their harvest.
Since inception in 2018, over 1 million farmers have subscribed to the platform with more than 300,000 being 30-day active users. Digifarm was recognized for demonstrating impressive collaboration between stakeholders and showcasing how technology can be used to improve the lives of millions.
