Nike jumps over Samsung in a World Cup year

Sports merchandise seller Nike, which is making top shelves orders for Nigeria’s world cup jersey has skipped Samsung as the most popular brand in Africa.

The jersey which received 3 million pre-orders before going on sale on May 29 may have propelled the love of the tick-brand in one of the most popular countries on the continent.

Nike which was second last year in the African Business magazine releases its ranking of Africa’s Most Admired Brands has pipped Samsung, South Korea’s tech behemoth that pushes mobile phones, home appliances and industrial scale air conditioning and cold chain.

European brands once again dominate this year’s listing with 40 brand listings with African brands represent a little less than 20 percent, similar to previous years.

Dangote’s brand (which came in at 21 on the main listing) was chosen as the most admired African brand. MTN (which came in at number 6 in the main ranking) came in second.

The most admired brand in financial services was Nigeria’s GTB (Guaranty Trust Bank).
