Several parts of Kenya are projected to experience more than usual rainfall in the coming days, potentially leading to floods.

Several parts of Kenya are projected to experience more than usual rainfall in the coming days, potentially leading to floods, the Climate Prediction and Applications Center (ICPAC) of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has said.

Also set to experience similar downpour and therefore floods will be several parts of neighbouring Uganda and Tanzania, the regional weather agency notified the public on Wednesday.

It added, "More than usual rainfall is expected over parts of northern and southern Tanzania, southern Kenya, southwestern Somalia, western regions of Rwanda, and Burundi, most parts of South Sudan, and western Ethiopia.

According to ICPAC the projected downpour is set to range between 50mm and 200mm in the said countries.

The weatherman cautioned that the rainfall in the Horn of Africa region is likely to trigger flooding across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, with the latter facing the greatest risk of flooding. Among the three countries, Kenya faces the least risk of flooding, ICPAC noted.

Earlier this week, the Kenya Meteorological Department announced that Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley regions will experience rainfall, with temperatures ranging between 30°C and 32°C.

At the same time, the local agency said parts of Turkana and Samburu counties will remain dry, with peak temperatures averaging 38°C.

The high heat stress forecast sync's with ICPAC's projection that temperatures across several parts of Somalia, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan as well as Tanzania will be warmer than usual.
