Foul play suspected as missing Mlolongo duo found dead
The search for two of the three missing men who were allegedly abducted from Mlolongo has come to a tragic end with the discovery of the bodies of Justus Mutumwa and Martin Mwau at Nairobi Funeral Home.
Their disappearance of the two since late December 2024 saw rights activists sue the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and the Director-General of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Mohammed Amin to determine their whereabouts.
“A quick search on the body has confirmed it is that of the missing man Mutumwa who is party to the case in court. This information has come to us as the case proceeded in court,” said lawyer and Makueni County Senator Dan Maanzo.
Justus Mutumwa went missing alongside Martin Mwau and Karani Muema. According to Mutumwa's family, they were informed that the body was collected from Ruai and booked at Nairobi Funeral Home on December 18th. Apparently, this was just two days after Mutumwa was reported missing.
For Martin Mwau, his body was also found at the Nairobi Funeral Home, formerly known as City Mortuary, further raising questions around their disappearance and subsequent deaths.
When IG Kanja finally appeared in court on Thursday after skipping earlier requests to take to the stand, he said the police had no knowledge about the whereabouts of the Mlolongo three. On his part, DG Amin told the judge that that the disappearance of the men was an active matter under investigation.
According to IG Kanja, the missing persons' reports were officially recorded at Athi River Police Station under OB No. 23/21/12/24 and Mlolongo Police Station under OB No. 43/25/12/2024.
“I am appearing before this court pursuant to a court order that directed I do appear on account of three persons who were reported missing from Athi River and Mlolongo Townships," IG Kanja said.
"I also wish to state that the missing persons are not under the custody of the national police service. We have not arrested them and they are not under our custody," added Amin.
State prosecutor Mark Baraza said that the Directorate of Public Prosecutions forwarded the case to the IG for investigation and expects to receive the results.
"We are aware of incidents of abduction. Following these complaints, the DPP directed the IG to investigate. The IG investigates and has institutional independence to do so. We are expecting the file on these abductions that we have heard about on social media and mainstream media," Baraza stated.
