Traffic violators to face swift justice via SMS fine notifications

NTSA Traffic Rules

NTSA's instant fine notification system comes just a week after the authority agreed to embark on installing cameras on key road across select cities and roads as part of a bold plan to tame rising cases of accidents in the country.

Motorists caught breaching traffic law will have seven days to settle instant fines which shall be delivered to them via a new SMS notification system starting today.

In an update to the public on Monday, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) said its instant fines management system is meant to ensure accountability in traffic enforcement.

"The process is fully automated and operates without human intervention, ensuring greater transparency, efficiency and accountability in traffic enforcement," stated NTSA Director General in a statement.

He added, "All fines issued through the system can be paid through the branch network of KCB Group within seven days."

Motorists who fail to honour the charges within the said timelines will be slapped with interests even as the concerned driver suffers denial of services from the NTSA until the dues are settled.

NTSA's notification comes just a week after the authority agreed to embark on installing cameras on key road across select cities and roads as part of a bold plan to tame rising cases of accidents in the country.

According to statistics, during the 2025 festive season, road fatalities increased to 415, a 23 percent increase from a similar period in 2024. What's more, a total of road 5,009 people lost their lives last year, up from 4,448 deaths in 2024.

“We have taken forever. The Ministry of Transport, why don’t we enforce the instant fines program? Why haven’t we rolled out the cameras on our roads? Rolling out cameras is not rocket science. Let us roll out the cameras in the five or six major towns within one month,” stated President William Ruto, adding that these gadgets should be integrated into the instant fines framework.

He was speaking at National Council on the Administration of Justice forum where concerns over slow rollout instant fines targeting traffic offenders came up.

President Ruto also delved into corruption within the traffic department in the National Police Service, noting that bribery and inefficiency continues to undermine public confidence in the law enforcement unit.
