ALTERED: This video isn’t of Ruto nominating Duale for deputy president

The video is of President Ruto’s address on 3 May 2024 when the country was expecting cyclone Hidaya to make landfall at the Kenyan Coast.

This video circulating on TikTok purporting that President William Ruto has nominated the Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Climate Aden Duale for the post of Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya is ALTERED.

The video purports to show President Ruto stating in part, “I nominate the Hon. Aden Barre Duale for serving as Deputy President for consideration and approval by the National Assembly…”

The TikTok video was shared on 11th October 2024, during the impeachment motion against Gachagua at the National Assembly. However, following proceedings by the lawmakers, both the National Assembly and the Senate finally voted to impeach him.

A reverse image search shows the original video was first published by Citizen Digital (see screengrab below) as President Ruto spoke on 3 May 2024 when the country was expecting cyclone Hidaya to make landfall on the coast.

Following the impeachment, President William Ruto nominated and forwarded the name of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to the National Assembly for consideration and approval as the new Deputy President.

On Friday, 18th October 2024, the National Assembly approved Prof. Kindiki as Kenya’s deputy president. However, as of 22nd October 2024, Prof. Kindiki was yet to be sworn into office following a court order stopping the nomination of a new deputy president.
